Russia's Baltic Shipyard has announced that it has won a 100 billion ruble ($1.5 billion) contract to build the fourth and fifth 22220 nuclear-powered icebreakers, according to Naval News website on Tuesday.

Relevant icebreakers will be deployed to Russian service bases as part of the world's only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet.

The Baltic Shipyard is a member of the Russian Joint Shipbuilding Company and the only bidder for related projects. The first ship of this class was launched at the Baltic Shipyard in November 2013. The second ship was completed in May 2015. The third ship was launched in July 2016. Once put into operation, the 22220 icebreaker will be the largest and strongest icebreaker ever built.

It has a drainage capacity of 33,450 tons and a length of 173 meters. The 22220 icebreaker is equipped with two RITM-200 nuclear reactors, each with a heat capacity of 175 MW. The propulsion of this class of icebreakers will be 60 fleets, which is why this class of icebreakers is also known as LK-60.

These icebreakers are classified by the Russian Maritime Registry (RMRS) as Type 9 icebreakers. The maximum ice breaking capacity of the 22220 icebreaker is 3.0 meters. The ships are scheduled to sail along the Arctic coast of Russia.
